The short answer
2 to 8 screenshots per device type, JPEG or 24-bit PNG without transparency. Each side 320 to 3840 px, the long side at most twice the short side.

Rules for every screenshot
- FormatJPEG or 24-bit PNG. No alpha channel.
- Size320 to 3840 px per side; the long side can't be more than twice the short side.
- CountUp to 8 per device type, at least 2 to publish.
- PromotionApps need 4 or more at 1080 px or larger. Games need 3 landscape shots at 1920 × 1080 or 3 portrait at 1080 × 1920.

Questions
What size should Google Play screenshots be?
1080 × 1920 pixels (9:16 portrait) or 1920 × 1080 for landscape. Google accepts any size from 320 to 3840 pixels per side as long as the long side is at most twice the short side, but 1080 pixels or more is needed for promotion.
How many screenshots does Google Play need?
At least two to publish, across your device types, and up to eight per device type. Use four or more at 1080 pixels or larger to be eligible for promotion. Tablets and Chromebooks need at least four.
What size is the Google Play feature graphic?
Exactly 1024 × 500 pixels, JPEG or 24-bit PNG without transparency. Every listing needs one; it sits at the top of your store page and in promotions.
Can Google Play screenshots have transparency?
No. Screenshots and the feature graphic must be JPEG or 24-bit PNG without an alpha channel. Only the 512 × 512 app icon is a 32-bit PNG with alpha.
What size are tablet screenshots on Google Play?
9:16 in portrait or 16:9 in landscape, with each side between 1080 and 7680 pixels, and at least four of them for 7-inch tablets, 10-inch tablets and Chromebooks.
